Zombee (2023)
An offbeat aesthetic kinship between a bee and Cordyceps Fungus, emerging from the backdrop of a gilded frame.
There are three different macrame voices present in this sculptural wall hanging. The black and grey wallpaper that the bee rests on is a conventional, geometric modern macrame pattern. The bee is a fully three dimensional macrame sculpture, knotted around a custom steel armature. And the Cordyceps Fungus that is made from clusters of macrame knots, tightly wound together in an organic sculpture that disrupts the otherwise symmetrical piece.
From a distance, "Zombee" presents a nod to the omnipresent Victorian bee: an emblem of productivity and hard work. Viewed up close, though, the piece is really about the fungus--which has far less symbolic expedience for capitalism, and that's what makes it more interesting.
